THE FOG – Companions of Taoism, Buddhism and Gnoticism
Today I began my day like every other. I preformed morning ablutions, meditated and drove 90 minutes to work. I usually make the drive in silence after listening to the morning news on CBC radio. And as is most often the case the news was disturbing. The headlines this morning were about Syrian refuges, unethical politicians and the abduction and murder of two year old Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette along with the murder of her father. To say this was disturbing is a gross understatement. As I continued my drive it was a beautiful warm and sunny morning. I was driving up highway #11 to Huntsville, Ontario. There was a light fog caressing the numerous Muskoka lakes and as the sun rose and penetrated the fog it created a mystical ambiance. As birth was being given to a new day I felt a paradox of emotion. How could so much darkness exist in a world that was capable of so much sublime beauty?
In both Canada and the USA we are in the midst of an election with all its bizarre rhetoric. The spin doctors we have all been exposed to through social medial are nothing more than pomposity. The display of pretentiousness is over whelming. In the midst of all this I searched my mind and tried to answer the question we all ask ourselves. What can I do? I don’t want to fall into the trap of apathy and say, there is nothing that little old me can do! What I can do as an individual may be small but it is something. And if my singular effort can join with your singular effort then that is even more. As we listen to the rhetoric of obsolete government making election promises, we know we are being lied to. But out of frustration we slip into the old denials and think, well, maybe this time, or this politician will be different. The truth is that it will never be different unless we the people want it. The political system we have can only breed what it was designed to breed. A culture of speculators and scoundrels. It may not have been this way in the beginning but this is what politics and politicians have become. Politicians speak out of every orifice of their bodies. They make promises but never quite get around to the implementation stage. What they can do is study, finance commissions, spend money on themselves and in the end, after the public forgets, somehow never get around to the solutions. Government reminds me of an immature child in an adult body who lives in a world of delusion and privilege that is distant from the realities of mainstream society. As a result it has a self-serving world view. They prefer to ride out the crisis. Unless of course we the people start to develop long term memories and insist our voices are seriously heard. Unfortunately a single voice will be branded an instigator, security threat or terrorist. It is only by our collective voice that the elected officials of Government will listen. How they listen will also depend on what type of government they are sympathetic to. So I ask again, what can we do? I suggest we can work on ourselves. We can go within and search for gnosis. We can seek enlightenment. It is obvious that well intentioned NGO’s and the like are not enough. They are band aid solutions. They can hold the line but for true progress to happen humanity must wake up. This has always been the answer and this has always been suppressed by the commerce of greed regardless of the historical moment.
Taoism, Buddhism and Gnosticism have always been here because they live in the human heart. They have always been suppressed by dominate world orders because they are the solution to the mess the planet is in. They are a collective and global awareness. So I choose to put my effort into waking up. I choose the spiritual path of gnosis and enlightenment. I choose a path that must distance itself from the dogmas and theologies of todays distorted religious institutions. I choose to be a voice who is the friend of my Taoist, Buddhist and Gnostic companions on the road less travelled. I want to share my journey of awakening with all. I want to learn from others and share what I learn. I refuse to let Phan Thi Kim Phul the Vietnam napalm survivor be forgotten. I refuse to let the Tank Man of the Tiananmen Square massacre be forgotten. I refuse to let Mohamed Bouazizi who ignited the Arab Spring to be forgotten. I refuse to let Aylan, Galip and their mother Rehan who drowned seeking a better life after fleeing Syria be forgotten. I refuse to let Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette and her father Terry be forgotten. I refuse to let the millions of people who have been oppressed, tortured and murdered throughout human history be forgotten for committing the crime of pursuing gnosis and enlightenment. So the question I put to myself and to you is how we can individually and collectively make the currency of love and compassion the only measure of human progress? I advocate that we must respect the physical, mental and spiritual resources we have and use them the way mother nature has intended. Progress has always been slow. But there must always be progress. If we continue to stoke the internal fire of enlightenment and gnosis then perhaps the next tipping point humanity could cross may be into the proverbial Promised Land. Let us not be removed from Gnosis which is our true nature.
